POLY
Project type
Research object
Date
February 2023
Location
Berlin
Poly examines the shifting power dynamics between people and the objects that surround them. The project began as an open-ended investigation into how meaning emerges through use and interaction. A series of ambiguous objects without predefined function were produced and given to participants, who were invited to explore them freely and propose their own interpretations and uses.
From this process emerged a body of work engaging with three overlapping contexts: Sex toys, self-defense tools, and children’s toys. Each of these categories carries distinct cultural codes of intimacy, vulnerability, and control. Poly absorbs their aesthetic signals while refusing to commit to any single meaning or utility.
By inhabiting this uncertain space, Poly becomes a study of how design mediates social taboos and reveals hidden hierarchies of desire, fear, playfulness and protection. It invites viewers to confront their own systems of interpretation, questioning where the boundaries between safety and pleasure, innocence and violence, function and fantasy are drawn.
